Common Hip Dysfunction

From degenerative osteoarthritis to groin and hamstring strains, there are many reasons for pain in the hip region. These problems can potentially be alleviated or treated with movement-based therapies that focus on rehabilitating function, restoring pain-free movement and creating resilience. Even problematic bursae can respond positively to exercise by improving the movement around these fluid- filled structures and reducing some of the pressure upon them. Of all the joints discussed in this book, it is probably the hip joint that has the best capacity to improve through body-weight exercise.

One major consideration of hip function is quite simply that in most people the hip is not moved through anywhere near its full ROM. Although you can perhaps say the same of the shoulder, the hip especially lacks use as we become adults. Cast your mind back to your activities as a child: squatting and kneeling to play, running, jumping, climbing and kicking. It is often said by people with hip pain that they do not need therapy exercises for the hip because they are active – they walk everywhere. Walking is a wonderful exercise for general wellbeing and health; for mobilising the hip, however, it is not so good. Get up and walk around. How much range does your hip go through compared with what it could potentially achieve?

We will now explore some common hip problems, before focusing on targeted body-weight exercises.
